Fluoride and Sealants
At the office of Joseph Dautremont, DDS, it is our goal to help you maintain optimal oral health. We know that your teeth are exposed to a lot every day, including harmful acid attacks from plaque and oral bacteria, as well as acids from the foods and beverages you consume. These acids can eat away at your enamel, leading to tooth decay and the eventual formation of cavities. We can help to protect your teeth from these acid attacks with fluoride and sealants.
The enamel of your teeth is heavily mineralized. One of the naturally occurring elements in the teeth is fluoride. Fluoride is essential for protecting the teeth against acid attacks. Every day, the acids your teeth are exposed to cause demineralization, and some fluoride is lost. Fortunately, fluoride can be replaced. There are several ways in which remineralization of your teeth occurs. Fluoride can be restored through drinking treated water. Some foods contain trace amounts of fluoride as well. You can also invest in fluoridated oral care products. For some, this is not enough. This is where fluoride treatments come into play.
Fluoride treatments are quick and painless. They are often done during your regular dental cleanings. After the teeth have been cleaned, we apply a fluoride gel to the surfaces of your teeth. Fluoride absorbs directly into the enamel of the teeth and immediately goes to work remineralizing them. To ensure the effectiveness of the treatment, it is important that you wait at least 30 minutes after treatment before you drink or eat anything.
These treatments are commonly associated with children. Fluoride not only helps to protect the teeth of those who are most prone to cavities, but it also helps to protect developing adult teeth as they emerge. While beneficial to children, adults can benefit as well, particularly those who have bridgework or certain oral conditions that cause dry mouth.
The chewing surfaces of your molars are particularly susceptible to the development of cavities. This is because these areas contain deep crevices that are difficult to reach with your toothbrush. Without proper cleaning, bacteria and debris are allowed to collect and start destroying your teeth.
Sealants are a simple procedure designed to prevent buildup from accumulating in the crevices of your molars. Like fluoride, it is quick and completely painless. After cleaning your teeth, an acid etch is applied to the target teeth. The acid helps to create a rough texture that will help the sealants, which are made up of plastic and other materials, to bond more effectively to the teeth when applied. After the acid is washed off and the teeth dried again, the sealant material is painted on. A specialized light is used to dry the sealants, and they start protecting your teeth right away. Along with helping to prevent the buildup of bacteria and debris in the crevices of your molars, sealants also help to make your molars significantly easier to clean.
Cavities put your oral health at risk. Not only do they compromise the structure of your teeth, but they can also lead to serious, painful infections that can also put your whole-body health at risk. Fluoride and sealants are designed to help prevent tooth decay and the formation of cavities, helping your teeth to remain strong and healthy.
